La Place de Bordeaux – September releases

A number of high value DRC wines traded this week, including La Tache 1996, 2016 Assortments and the famous Romanee Conti 1971. The trades helped push Burgundy’s trade share up to 24.2% of the total by value, while the Champagne and ‘Others’ categories were up by 7.1% and 5.8% respectively. Bordeaux’s share of trade also rose to 50.4%, having dipped last week (42.3%).
All the Liv-ex indices closed August in positive territory: the Liv-ex 50 – which tracks the price performance of the First Growths – closed August on 349.69, up 0.27% on the previous month. The Liv-ex 100 – the industry benchmark – was up 0.74%, while the Liv-ex 1000 – our broadest measure of the market – rose 0.57%.
The top traded wines this week were from a range of regions, including Burgundy, Champagne and Italy. Bordeaux’s Cheval Blanc 2006 took the top spot. It last traded at £3,862 per 12×75, down 8% on its release price of £4,200. It was closely followed by First Growth, Margaux 2007, which traded at £3,535 per 12×75.
Tignanello 2016 – a favourite of Boris Johnson and the Duchess of Sussex – was also among the top five and traded at £830 per 12×75. September releases
Every September, La Place de Bordeaux release some of the most sought-after wines from the Rhone, Italy and the Rest of the World. This week saw the release of Opus One 2016 at £2,860 per 12×75, up 6% on the 2015 (£2,700). While Italy’s Masseto 2016, which was scored 100 points from Monica Larner (Wine Advocate), James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck, came out at £6,000 per 12×75, a 9% increase on the 2015 (£5,500).
Almaviva 2017, Solaia 2016 and Sena 2017 were also released towards the end of the week. All three wines were highly rated by James Suckling: he awarded Almaviva and Solaia a perfect 100 points and Sena a slightly lower 99 points.
